The matter in the first line
If the ad says marriage green card consultation, the page starts there rather than with a general welcome.

Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsA search ad for an immigration practice has to do three things at once: match a very specific need, speak in the right language and sound like a real, licensed office. A single broad campaign aimed at "immigration lawyer" is easy to build and hard to make profitable, because it blends a spouse planning a petition, an employer researching a work visa, a student writing an essay, and a frightened relative of someone detained. This guide shows how we structure accounts by matter, language and urgency, what we put into negatives, how we handle phones after hours and how we judge results. Management runs $895 monthly for Google alone, or $1,595 once a second platform joins, with no term to serve.
Campaign structure
| Campaign | Keyword themes | Landing page | Special handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family petitions, English | marriage green card, spouse visa, immigration lawyer near me, petition for parent, fiance visa | Family immigration page | Daytime schedule plus a clear booking button. |
| Family petitions, Spanish | tarjeta verde por matrimonio, peticion para mi esposa, abogado de inmigracion | Spanish family page | Run only when a Spanish speaker can take calls; write ads natively. |
| Work visas and sponsorship | H-1B attorney, PERM lawyer, O-1 visa, employer sponsorship | Employment page | Audience is employers; use business hours and a form. |
| Citizenship and naturalization | N-400 lawyer, citizenship application help, naturalization attorney | Naturalization page | Lower urgency; test steady modest budgets. |
| Urgent enforcement matters | deportation lawyer, detained family member attorney, notice to appear | Urgent matters page | Call-focused, only when someone will answer; keep language sober. |
| Humanitarian matters | asylum attorney, U visa lawyer, VAWA help | Humanitarian page | Consider quieter copy, privacy statement and careful tracking. |
| Brand and attorney names | firm name, attorney names, office city | Home or attorney page | Protect your name and show consistent details. |
Keywords
Clients rarely type like an attorney. They drop accents, mix English and Spanish in one phrase, write form numbers wrong, add a country of origin or search by a story ("my wife is outside the country"). Phrase match and exact match give control, while broad match with careful signals can find unexpected wording if your tracking is reliable and the negatives list is active. We start tight, watch the search terms report weekly for the first several weeks and let successful phrases earn their own ad groups.
Language settings need care. Google Ads can target by the language a person uses, but the signal is imperfect. A bilingual household may use English settings on a phone and still search in Spanish. Rather than assume, we write keywords in the language we want, create ads in that language and examine the search terms to see who really arrives. Landing pages must match: a Spanish ad that opens an English page is a quick exit.
Competitor and firm-name searches deserve restraint. Bidding on another attorney's name may be restricted or frowned upon under some bar rules, and it rarely feels trustworthy to the searcher. We do not recommend it unless your attorney confirms it fits your rules.
Negatives
| Negative term or theme | Reason | Note |
|---|---|---|
| jobs, salary, careers, internship, hiring | People looking for work at a firm | Add early; applies to all campaigns. |
| law school, LSAT, bar exam, degree, course | Students and prospective attorneys | Always add. |
| pdf, template, sample, download | People searching for forms | Check first; a search for a specific form number can still be a real client. |
| pro bono, free legal aid, legal aid near me | People who need no-cost help | Add if you do not run a no-cost service; otherwise place in a separate campaign. |
| do it yourself, DIY | Self-filers | Add; these searchers rarely retain counsel. |
| uscis.gov, official website, case status | Navigational searches for a government site | Add to avoid paying for people who want an agency page. |
| "free" on its own | Can block valuable "free consultation" searches | Use phrase-level negatives instead, and watch the search terms. |
| other practice areas you do not handle | Wrong matter | Examples include criminal defense terms for a firm that does not take them. |
No fixed list fits every office. A firm that does removal defense must not block "deportation" anywhere, and a firm that offers a free first call should test carefully before blocking anything with the word "free."
Phones
The worst outcome in this field is an urgent caller who reaches voicemail in the wrong language. Ad scheduling should match staffing, not wishful thinking. If your office closes at five and the evening hours are covered by an answering partner who is trained on your case types and speaks both languages, you can keep ads running. If not, pause the call-heavy campaigns after hours and let the web form carry the message with a clear promise of when someone will call back.
Call extensions and call-only ads put the phone first, and they perform well for urgent matters. They also leave less room for explanation, which may matter where a person needs to understand that a consultation is not the same as legal advice on the spot. We usually pair calls with a landing page for case types where reading helps the decision.
After a news event, call volume may spike. Daily caps and a quick plan to widen or reduce hours prevent chaos. Your intake lead should know who has authority to pause the account.
Setup order
Which matters, which languages, which hours, which states. Ads should never promise more than the office can do.
Calls from ads, form submissions, click-to-text events and booked consultations, each recorded without sensitive case details.
Check platform policies for restricted categories and prepare the documents Google may ask for, such as bar admission and firm identity.
One to three campaigns, a limited area or set of languages and a daily cap.
Add negatives, split ad groups and note surprising phrases for the website team.
After the first month, compare spend to answered calls, booked consultations and, as the data allows, retained matters.
Landing pages
Match the ad
If the ad says marriage green card consultation, the page starts there rather than with a general welcome.
Visible without scrolling
On phones the number is tappable, hours are stated and the language options are shown.
Person before process
Name, photograph, languages and the types of matters handled.
Reduces fear
Describe the consultation: how long, in person or by video, what to bring and what it costs, as your rules permit.
Few fields
Name, phone or email, matter type and preferred language. Do not ask for sensitive details on a web form.
Earns trust
A sentence about how contact information is used and who sees it.
The broader channel picture and ordering is in the paid ads overview, and page design details are in the website guide.
Measurement
| Metric | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Calls over a set length that were answered by a person | Separates real conversations from hang-ups and spam | Call tracking |
| Consultations booked | Closer to revenue than a form submission | Booking tool or intake notes |
| Language of the caller | Shows whether a Spanish campaign finds Spanish speakers | Intake note field |
| Matter type of the caller | Shows which campaign earns its budget | Intake note field |
| Retained matters | The final answer | Case management system |
| Missed calls | The hidden cost of any campaign | Phone system reports |
Responsible use
Optimization means using conversion data, and conversion data can be sensitive. We keep tracking limited to events such as a call, a form submission or a booking and never include case facts, status details or document information in anything sent to an ad platform. If you import retained matters back as an offline conversion, discuss with your counsel what identifiers are involved and whether the practice is compatible with your confidentiality duties.
We also stay inside platform policy. Ads should never imply that you are the government, that you can obtain a result or that you have special access. The same applies to extensions and sitelinks.
Ad text
| Element | Example wording | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Matter | Family Immigration Consultations | Matches the search and tells the reader the page is about their situation. |
| Format and language | Video or Office Meetings, English and Spanish | Answers the silent question about access. |
| Identity | Licensed Immigration Lawyer, City Office | Counters the fear of non-lawyers. |
| Next step | Book a Consultation Online or Call Today | One clear action, with no pressure. |
| Fee clarity | Ask About Consultation Fees | Shows that cost is not a secret; confirm what your rules allow. |
| What to avoid | Guaranteed, Fast Approval, Free Papers, Official | Promises and look-alike language invite policy and bar problems. |
Example wording only. Every headline is checked by your attorney, and ads in Spanish are written by a fluent person and not run through a translator.
Search terms
The search terms report is the most honest document in the account. For an immigration lawyer it often shows spelling variants, form numbers, country names and long questions that no keyword plan predicted. It also shows waste: people looking for a government office, a job, a template or a free clinic. We review it weekly in the first weeks and monthly afterward, add negatives, promote phrases that bring consultations into their own ad groups and pass useful wording to the website team so a page can answer it.
The investment
Account questions
Management is $895 a month when Google is the only platform and $1,595 with a second. The ad budget is yours and is paid to Google. You can stop at the end of any month.
Several small campaigns rather than one large one: family matters in English, family matters in Spanish, work visas, citizenship, urgent matters and brand, each with its own keywords, ads and landing page.
If your office can answer calls and consultations in Spanish at the hours you advertise, yes. Write the ads natively and send them to a Spanish page.
Only run call-focused urgent campaigns when someone trained will answer. Otherwise use a form with a clear callback promise or a trusted answering partner.
Expect a learning period of several weeks. We judge by calls answered and consultations booked, not by impressions.
We do not recommend it unless your bar's rules and your attorney clearly allow it.
You do. Campaigns run in an account under your firm's name, so the data stays with you.
